Work in Progress toward CM9 beta1 for Epic 4G

UPDATE: CM9 beta1 released!

We update this page often as things are fixed, so please check back periodically.

News
Name that Netflix Show and Episode # for Brownie Points
  • As noted on the Epic CM Google+ page, beta0's freeing of 36MB caused very rare glitches in video playing.  We need your help in identifying 100% reproducible methods of exposing these glitches.  Please reply in the linked G+ post.
  • When using a wired headset, users have reported that the microphone volume is too low, making it difficult to be understood on the phone.  What is a brand and model of headset that can reproduce this problem?
  • Thanks to user feedback, bbelos decided to leave the Dock Audio behavior as-is.  Alarm and ringtones will play from the phone's speaker, not the dock.
  • The newly working Sprint Visual Voicemail (see Customization Guide) has a few glitches, the most annoying of which is that it does not block the text messages from 9016 that you receive when there is a new voicemail.  While there is a desire to modify CM9 to hide 9016 SMS messages if Sprint VVM is active, currently none of the devs actually use Sprint VVM, so it is uncertain if this issue will be fixed before beta1.
  • These issues are targeted to be fixed by, or after the crespo kernel merge, which will likely take a few weeks to stabilize.
    • CM9 for Epic is missing 5 of the 8 motion sensors usable in Gingerbread.  This apparently is the cause of auto-rotation not working for the minority of users.  Many of these users are able to make auto-rotation work by calibrating sensors using the temporary sdcard EL30.  Thanks to Joseph Shugzda for identifying this issue!
    • Maximum speaker volume is much smaller than Samsung's ROMs.

  1. Will the 9016 text for voicemail be worked on in Beta 1?

  2. The Netflix show and Episode number are: Stargate SG-1 Episode# 107 "Menace"

  3. I use the dock audio in the car, if the audio routed through the audio out it would be terrible since I have it connected to my car stereo. It has never routed ringtones/alarms through the car dock audio out but rather through the phone itself. I don't use the audio out at home so I don't know if there's a difference there.

  4. 9016 can be blocked by going to your Sprint home page and blocking that number, or any other number, through their site. Somewhere with the personalizations or account settings.

  5. This is coming together really nicely. I'm sad that I gave my mom my Epic when I got my Evo 3D (that build is coming along nicely as well)... but she's having issues with Stock 2.3 TW. Once all is perfect I'll re-reboot her, nandroid her, and pop this puppy onto her phone. It's safe to assume that CM9 runs really well on the single core CPU? :)

  7. @shiggity: cm9 is blazing fast on the epic. im currently using a 3rd party kernel with overclock capabilities, but i use it mainly for voodoo color and sound. i overclock when playing games, but for normal use i use the stock frequencies with custom undervolts and the "conservative" cpu governor to help save battery. even with those settings, its blazing fast! not to mention how highly customizable it is, and how good it looks... hope that helps a little. oh, and even when ive used the stock kernel, it ran incredibly well. i just cant live without my voodoo color.

  8. On stock roms, dock audio for ringtones and alarms has always routed out through the desktop dock, unless you disable audio redirection. Because of this I've always had to remember to disable redirection, or I'll miss my alarm in the morning.
The current behavior, while not "correct" is more desirable, because not only do alarms and ringtones sound, even if there are no speakers attached to the dock, but also my car speakers aren't blown out by some loud notification whenever I get an email or SMS.
I'm inclined to say leave it as it is, because it's perfect now.

    1. Or, maybe we could have it set up opposite to the stock ROMs, e.g., keep it the way it is by default, but have the option to enable audio redirection for those who desire it. How does that sound?

The reason I personally chose cyanogenmod was for all the added options over the stock ROMs. I'm all for having as many choices as possible. Even if I don't implement a particular option, I enjoy knowing it's available.

  9. Any chance of getting a fix on the phantom voicemail notification? Even an option to hide voicemail notifications would really make my day.

    1. I have had the voicemail notification for the last few updates but I was installing and not wiping my data. I installed beta 0 and still have the problem but then I decided to wipe dalvic and cache and reinstalled beta 0 and I have not had the notification since and it has been 4 days so that is what did it for me.

  11. Epic keyboard doesn't fully function (special buttons not working). MailDroid doesn't seem to be able to send mail for some reason (receiving is fine). Other than that, I'm loving this!

    1. A 3rd party mail app. Facebook was also having problems. It was a network communication issue of some kind. A reboot fixed the issues.

  12. No ringtones or notifications should be played through the dock.

If you answer a call while docked, audio should be played through the dock unless you have a bluetooth device also connected. In that case it should go to bluetooth.

    1. I've never had call audio routed through the dock (mine is always in the dock in my car, the the dock is connected to my stereo's audio in), if I answer a call while docked it will go to the phones internal speakerphone if I don;t have my bluetooth paired.

    2. I get that same behavior when docked. My comment just how I feel it should behave.

    3. The main problem is that would pose noise cancellation issues I would think. I have tried precisely what you describe with my old Palm Pre and it just didn't work well. If somebody wants a car speakerphone they should get a bluetooth head unit that supports that, I have a Sony that does (although I don't currently use it, I'm not a car phone fan). Routing audio out through the car stereo and audio in through the phone is not the correct way to go about this I would think and I would have to disagree and say it shouldn't be the default behavior (however if somebody wants to make this behavior user-configurable that's fine too).

  13. FYI - That MailDroid issue was fixed with a reboot. Not sure what was up, but bi-directional communication was an issue for a bit. Not anymore.

    1. I take it back. There seems to be a problem with wifi after waking. In order to get programs like MailDroid to be able to connect to the internet again, I have to stop the wifi, allow 3G to come back online, make sure the app's connection has been reestablished, and then can switch to wifi again if I like. However, since I have to do this every time, I just leave wifi off for now in order to avoid the problem.

Really great ROM, though! I'm continuing to run it and will keep checking back for new versions.

  14. You can have Sprint block the short code of the vvm....9016, er whatever it is....for a temp fix...I have Sprint vvm (using G-Voice), and would be glad to test whatever...about to flash the kernel...thanks for all your hard work!

  15. PLEASE make it an option to set up the alarm and rings through the dock speakers. (Or at least tell us how we can adjust it in the ROM)

    1. This shouldn't be the default behavior, but if it were user-configurable that'd be fine. I use my car dock a lot and would hate having ringtones and stuff playing through my car stereo.

  16. Wired headset microphone volume being too low is a problem for me with beta0. I am using the stock samsung wired headset.

  17. Yes, speakers are much too low with both shadow kernel and stock. Sucks I have to play music through my xperia play instead at work #firstworldpains

  18. I'm very excited for the extra rotation options. Now just to get the extra sensors working so my auto rotation works again.

Thank you Dev's for this fantastic ROM.

  19. The video camera does not allow the led light to come on when shooting video in low light situations. I am still very pleased with how it runs but I am looking forward to future updates. Thanks
